Does online counseling work?

Surprisingly well! When I first heard of online counseling, I was one of those nay-sayers who thought it was a terrible idea. However, after several of my clients moved out of San Francisco due to the tech boom/housing crisis and requested to meet online and by phone, I inadvertently discovered online counseling is great.

I noticed that my clients were going deeper into their work, able to do embodied work in session, and loving the convenience.

I think there is something to be said about doing this work from the safety and comfort of your own home or office (which is a requirement for us to work together online).

And by meeting online, we are also saving the travel time of coming and going (often an hour or two) and reducing our carbon footprint.

Is online counseling right for me?

As much as I like online counseling, it is not right for everyone or every situation. Since we will not be in the same space, I cannot offer crisis counseling. You will be better served by someone local in your area that can provide you acute care when you need it.

Furthermore, for online counseling to work, you will need:

  • High speed Internet
  • Video conferencing capability
  • The VSee App
  • A private and safe space to meet in your home or office
  • The ability to pay your fees online

We can meet by phone only (no video), but I usually reserve that for people I have worked with for a while. If you are interested in phone sessions, let’s discuss.

If online counseling doesn’t work for you and you need help finding a referral in your area, I will do my best to support you to find someone like-minded. Just send me an email!

What are the pros and cons of online counseling?

Pros:

Convenience for busy professionals, students, parents and anyone else with a shortage of available time.

Accessibility for those who are not able to move around easily and for those without many options in their area.

Environmentally friendly option.

Cons:

You need to provide a private and safe space in which to meet.

Adjusting to video screens can be a little awkward at first, especially if you do not video chat or conference much.

Technical problems with computers and Internet can be troublesome and frustrating at times. If the Internet is down due to a storm or another event, we can have a phone session or reschedule at no cost.

What is Integral Counseling?

Integral Counseling is a transformative psychology for the whole you: mind, body, and soul. This is not a purely intellectual or analytical process; this is about creating congruence in yourself by digesting your life experiences, integrating the wisdom, and evolving your life.

Integral counseling is about supporting awareness, embodiment, and transformation to bring about an experience of wholeness, connectedness, and wellness.

Integral Counseling is about being awake and being able to respond to whatever life presents.

How long will this take?

It all depends on what is being worked through. It could be as short as two or three months, or as long as a few years. Everyone is different.

Many of my clients will do a piece of work over months or years, leave, and come back later as a different challenge arises. Sometimes just for one session. This is nice because we can build a relationship over time. I know the back story, so we don’t have to start again at the beginning.

I enjoy being a steady and reliable resource for my current clients. What’s most important in our work together is that you integrate new skill sets that basically put me out of business. Along the way you will become your own counselor.

How do I meet you online?

I meet my clients online through a highly encrypted, HIPAA-compliant, and free downloadable application called VSEE. You will receive an email invite and link to download VSee before our first appointment. Or you can access the invite and download it here: https://vsee.com/s/59d2c26ed52d2

It will work on your phone, tablet, or computer. My current clients get all the quality and depth of an in-person session, PLUS the perks of convenience, flexibility, saved travel time, and low environmental impact. In fact, my business is now entirely run on renewable energy resources – Thank You, Peninsula Clean Energy!

Can I try meeting you online before I decide on online counseling?

Yes. I offer a free 30-minute consultation through VSee. Since video conferencing is a new medium in the counseling world, it’s important that you try it and make sure it’s a good fit before committing to the process. You can call, text or book online your 30-minute consultation.

How do I book a session online?

You can book a session through my online, HIPPA-compliant calendar:

Embedded Scheduler:

Schedule Appointment

For your first appointment, you will be prompted to fill out an intake form. I appreciate your filling this out in advance; it will allow us to get the most out of the intake session.

Through the online booking app, you can choose a time that works for you and reschedule as needed.

You will receive an appointment reminder by text and email 24 hours before each session.

What are your fees and how do I pay?

I have several options listed below:

Pricing Plans

  • 30-Minute Consultation: Free
  • Sliding Scale: $200-$160 per session.
  • Note: $160 is reserved for those ready for therapy and experiencing financial hardships.

I accept all major credit cards and HSA cards through Square (set up to receive HSA).

My cancellation fee, if less than 48 hours, is the full fee. This supports follow-through with the work, honors the time you have reserved, and allows me to manage my business well.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not accept insurance. However, if your insurance provides reimbursement, I can provide you with a superbill. I am, however, set up to receive HSA cards through Square, if that is an option for you.
